This character would be nothing more than The Ditz, except they have one area of expertise in which no one can beat them. When that skill or talent is needed, they suddenly switch gears from airheadedness to hyper-competency.
The ability to hyperfocus is one of these talents ADHD people have. This might seem surprising to anyone believing ADHD is an attention deficit disorder, but the hyperfocus is the other side of the ADD coin. There is a different way of thinking, which is not disordered, merely different, and this gives rise to those flashes of genius. Brain scans show ADD children are more in an alpha brainwave state.
Alpha waves are electromagnetic oscillations in the brain during wakeful relaxation with closed eyes and on falling asleep and waking up. This is when intuitive thoughts can play unblocked structured thinking. This is the daydreaming ADD person. What really sets the ADHD personality apart is the boredom intolerance. The ADHD child struggles to concentrate on what is experienced, as boring and repetitive, but is able to concentrate on stimulating activity. It is generally accepted that kids with ADD are about two years behind their peers in maturing.
They are slow with learning intellectual skills such as to read and doing maths. The same kids are about two to three years ahead of ther non-ADD peers in conceptual skills such as understanding principles, art or music. Average intelectual thinking children cope well in an environment where they are told what to think.

He was diagnosed about 7 or 8 years ago, on meds for a while then we just ignored the problem thinking it would go away. Three years ago I left after a very bad manic episode and he would not seek any professional help. When I said I was leaving it turned into an even worse episode that landed him in jail for a DUI I think he was trying to kill himself with the use of the car.
Although the answer to this question may seem simple, it recurs with alarming regularity on aspie forums everywhere. Often, it is confused with the aspie’s ability to find a partner or the famous aspie empathy problems – these are different things altogether which I’ll hopefully discuss in follow-up posts.
However, the test still appears to be primarily a test for autistic traits. This is reflected in the statement that: The neurodiversity classification can be used to give a reliable indication of autism spectrum traits prior to eventual diagnosis. If you want to read more in detail about the development of the Aspie Quiz and what has changed over time, Leif Ekblad has published a paper detailing his research and a detailed history of the quiz. Of particular interest is the comparison of the AQ and Aspie Quiz scores, particularly for women.
Anecdotally, the Aspie Quiz has always appeared to be a better predictor of whether someone is on the spectrum and that is addressed in the paper as well. Before I do that, however, there is one sentence in the paper that jumped out at me that I want to share: For those who have wondered why they receive two scores on this test, I think the above quote sums it up nicely.
The information you share is used in the development of the test and has no impact on your scoring.
For me, this became almost an integral part of my personality and how people saw me. Great gal, horrible taste in men. I used to joke that if there was one unemployed, drug-addicted, criminally inclined asshat in a crowded room of wonderful, caring, loving men…. I read every self-help book there was about women who pick the wrong men. I asked the advice of everyone I knew. If there was a tactic, I tried it, a set of rules, I followed them, but the end result, with limited exceptions, was almost always the same.

Although the answer to this question may seem simple, it recurs with alarming regularity on aspie forums everywhere. Often, it is confused with the aspie’s ability to find a partner or the famous aspie empathy problems – these are different things altogether which I’ll hopefully discuss in follow-up posts. Emotional Behavior in Aspies Aspies are very capable of loving but they often confuse the issue by adopting an altogether too rigid view of love.
Despite popular mis-belief, aspies are generally fairly emotional beings. We have intense feelings of happiness and even more intense feelings of sadness. The smallest triggers can produce huge emotional responses in us. While a bad day at work may make an NT grumpy, it could make an aspie feel suicidal. Similarly, when something good happens an aspie may seem to be over-reacting or overly happy.
Most aspie adults have long since learned to control excessive displays of happiness but it’s very apparent in aspie children with jumping, shouting and singing. Aspies seem to categorize love as one of those mostly unattainable permanent states of extreme happiness directed at a single person. Such a state is not attainable with all partners and certainly isn’t sustainable over long periods.

These 10 facts about space will blow your mind Hyperfocus is a term that is not well defined, but is often used loosely when discussing symptoms of ADHD or autism spectrum disorder. Generally, it refers to the experience of focusing on one topic to the degree that all other stimuli are nearly completely shut out. This gives an individual the feeling of being isolated with the concept, problem, or activity in question and allows him or her to experience greater connection with that activity.
In some cases, this type of focus can be nearly compulsive, and it can be very hard to break the trance-like concentration experienced. There are many theories that address why this type of focus evolved, and many that claim that it is a benefit rather than a detriment even though it does not fit well with many socially appropriate learning schemes. Although the experience of hyperfocus resonates with many people, this is not an experience that is medically defined or identified precisely by psychiatric communities.
