A tender notice in the Maryborough Chronicle of 22 August reads: This was the land on which James Dowzer constructed a large two storeyed brick house as his residence, later known as Eskdale. Tenders were called in the Maryborough Chronicle for the brick and stone work of a 12 roomed house. It is thought that Dowzer designed his own residence as he is thought to have also designed the Church of England rectory in After leaving Ipswich, he arrived in Maryborough in November where he established a local business as a saddler and storekeeper in the fledgling town.
He continued in business until about , and was elected as the third Mayor of Maryborough in Little documentary evidence has been discovered about the origin of Eskdale, although seems to be the year in which it was built. Clay was apparently carried to the site and bricks were made at the rear of the property. Hand made iron nails were used in the construction of the European beech floor, and hand made brass nails were used in the construction of the doors.
Internal joinery was made using local cedar.

Dating is usually associative, linking traps to local archaeological sites and geomorphological features of known age. Limited excavation of sediments burying the lower sections of stone-walled fishtrap features has been previously undertaken with limited success. Recent fine-grained excavation and comprehensive AMS dating and analysis of channel in-fill sediments associated with an elaborate freshwater fishtrap complex at Lake Condah, western Victoria, yields reliable insights into the phased construction and use of the feature.
An early phase of basalt bedrock removal to create a bifurcated channel was subsequently in-filled with flood sediments incorporating stone artefacts and charcoal dated to c. After a hiatus, basalt blocks were added to the sides of the channel to create multi-tiered walls within the past — years. Graphical abstract Excavations at a large Aboriginal freshwater fishtrap at Lake Condah, western Victoria, Australia, indicate initial channel construction by removal of basalt lava blocks around years ago, with basalt block walls added to the sides of the channel within the past years.

Aboriginal history[ edit ] Newcastle and the lower Hunter Region were traditionally occupied by the Awabakal and Worimi Aboriginal People, who called the area Malubimba. Shortland entered what he later described as “a very fine river”, which he named after New South Wales’ Governor John Hunter. Over the next two years, coal mined from the area was the New South Wales colony’s first export.
Philip Gidley King , the Governor of New South Wales from , decided on a more positive approach to exploit the now obvious natural resources of the Hunter Valley. In the same year, the first shipment of coal was dispatched to Sydney. This settlement closed less than a year later. A settlement was again attempted in , as a place of secondary punishment for unruly convicts.
The settlement was named Coal River, also Kingstown and then renamed Newcastle, after England’s famous coal port. The link with Newcastle upon Tyne , England its namesake and also whence many of the 19th century coal miners came, is still obvious in some of the place-names — such as Jesmond , Hexham , Wickham , Wallsend and Gateshead.

Maryborough is known as the ‘Heritage City’ and although it isn’t as grand as Queensland’s two premier ‘Heritage Cities’ – Rockhampton and Charters Towers – it actually predates them both by decades. The city can boast a large number of beautiful historic buildings and the original settlement site – now nothing more than a series of plaques – is a fascinating insight into the evolution of an importance centre.
Today Maryborough is a city driven by the surrounding sugar, grazing and timber industries and catering for the hundreds of thousands of tourists who pass through on the journey north to Cairns. It was a short step for the town that grew up the banks of the river to be named Maryborough.

That year, Andrew Petrie and a party explored the Wide Bay River with their guides, escaped convict Bracefield and James Davis, another convict who had lived with the area’s Aborigines. Burnett explored the area further in During this time, on the river bank opposite today’s Baddow House, George Furber established a woolstore. The arrival of the Aldridge party spurred the rapid growth of the village of Maryborough. This period saw the beginning of a port for wool, area sawpits and other primary produce.
The Northern Road to Gayndah also started from this point. Maryborough was first settled in by Europeans and is one of Queensland’s oldest cities. It was first settled as a wool port and served as the Fraser Coast immigration port in the early days of Australian settlement. It was second only to Sydney as an eastern seaboard port for free settlers.
